These Top 10 foods are powerhouses and should be a part of your everyday meals. They are all very nutritionally dense and are loaded with antioxidants, lean protein, fiber and heart-healthy fats. And, best of all they are whole foods and most are low in calories compared to their volume, which means you will fill fuller and more satisfied after eating them.

  1. Beans and Legumes: They are extremely high in fiber, which helps keep you regular, and may also help reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. They also contain protein and are very high in antioxidants. The chemicals that give beans their color may help neutralize free radicals that can cause cellular damage. So be sure to eat of a variety of different colored beans.
  2. Blueberries and other Berries: Raspberries, cranberries, strawberries and blueberries are extremely rich in antioxidants, which help protect us from cancer. They are also high in vitamin C and fiber. Blueberries have the highest antioxidant value than any other fruit.
  3. Wild Salmon: The omega-3 fats in fatty fish like salmon can help reduce the risk of sudden-death heart attacks. And salmon that is caught wild has less PCB contaminants than farmed salmon.
  4. Oats: Oatmeal is one of the BEST foods to jump start your day. It is high in fiber. Research shows that 1 bowl of oatmeal a day can help lower cholesterol by 23%. They are also a great grain for diabetics as they have minimal impact on blood sugar levels.

You will get the most nutritional punch by combining these foods which will include a wide array of antioxidants, heart and joint healthy fats, proteins, complex carbohydrates you can “super-charge” your meals and your diet. Research supports that phytochemicals (found in many of these foods), antioxidants, micro-nutrients, vitamins and minerals all work together to help prevent and fight diseases such as; heart disease, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, and cancer. They also help maintain energy, regulate metabolic functions, and boost your mood. And, most of all they will help you to reach and maintain a healthy weight for life.
